This is a photo I took while Ozzy was healing from getting not one but two ACL repairs when he was about 1 1/2-2 years old. He was such a trooper! He never even yelped once during the healing process. In fact, it was really hard to keep him on bed rest and not run around outside during bathroom time! He looks like he’s grinning here. That’s my tough boy!

"No really, I'm fine! I just want to go for a little jog..."

“No really, I’m fine! I just want to go for a little jog…”

So the first week after our very eventful accidental introductions of the kitties, things have been quiet for the most part. We’ve kept the kittens separated successfully.

We did let Jack out by himself to meet Zelda and there was a lot of grumbling and growling on Zelda’s part but that was it.

Ozzy has met the two new kitties (Jack and Bailey) and thought he had two new buddies to play with. This freaks them out a bit but Ozzy is gentle so we think eventually they’ll be okay with one another. Once the new cat smell wears off Ozzy probably won’t even care anymore.

We also introduced Ozzy and Dani’s guinea pig Kirby, which was the best introduction thus far. Ozzy even gives Kirby cute little kisses.

We’ve made it to our 100th post!

Thanks so much to all of the people who have taken their time to read our previous posts and follow our blog. We hope you’ve enjoyed things so far and we’re looking forward to posting plenty more. 🙂

We celebrated this occasion by changing our blog layout just to mix it up a little bit.

We’d love to hear any suggestions any of you might have about things you’d like to see in the future.

We have decided to try our hands at baking homemade dog and cat treats from recipes we found on the interwebz. We’ll share the results, good or bad, so that you don’t have to do the dirty work yourself.

Tonight’s recipe:

PUMPKIN DOG TREATS WITH PEANUT BUTTER

Ingredients

2 ½ cups whole wheat flour

2 eggs

1 ¼ cup canned pumpkin (only use pure pumpkin puree, not the pie filling)

¼ cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)

½ teaspoonful ground cinnamon

¼ cup water

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Place all ingredients in a bowl.

3. Stir until thoroughly combined.

4. Add water as need to combine the ingredients.

5. Roll out dough to 1/4” thickness and cut with dog cookie cutters

6. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet.

7. Bake for 20 minutes (if you want a really hard cookie, bake for 5-10 minutes longer).

8. Leave in the oven to cool overnight. Or, cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Storage

Less than one week in a dog treat jar, 3 weeks in the refrigerator and 2 months in the freezer.

Please note that we did not have any cookie cutters handy. These are the raw treats all ready to go into the oven.

This recipe made a lot more treats than we had anticipated, but it all depends on how big you cut them as well.

Results

We had 3 very willing taste testers, not to mention that we also tried them ourselves. (Very bland to humans.)

However, all 3 dogs went crazy for this recipe! Even one very picky pug was absolutely delighted with them.

This is just one of many recipes Ashleigh found online and we’re looking forward to trying them out and letting you guys know the results.

The Kitty Chronicles:

Well, we did it. We finally moved in together. And although we both know each other very well, our cats are a completely different story. With Ashleigh owning Zelda and my husband and I owning Jack and Bailey, we knew it would be a challenge introducing them. My husband had owned his cat Jack well before we had even met each other. He’d raised him since he was a kitten and we decided a little over a year ago to get Jack a companion, which we adopted in the form of a chubby girl cat named Bailey. The two did the typical angry cat dance of hatred that most cats seem to do involving plenty of growling and hissing, but no actual contact was made. After a little while they became really close and Bailey even took on the adorable responsibility of grooming Jack.

Ashleigh has had her cat Zelda for four years. Zelda had been introduced to other cats before as well, even being buddies with a male cat. However we decided to attempt to make introductions slowly to stress the cats out as little as possible.

Zelda

Zelda

This is where we decided to chronicle our adventure in introducing two familiar cats to one unfamiliar cat with her territory already set.

DAY ONE:

Before we could try to slowly introduce the cats after they had become somewhat familiar with one another’s scents, Zelda seized the opportunity to slip through an open door and kamikaze Bailey as she had just arrived. What ensued was a screeching, snarling, snorting ball of furry hatred. Being followed by three yelling people attempting to get hold of one cat to separate them. Needless to say, things did not start off as planned.

From here forward (for about the next week) we’re going to keep them completely separated and switching out who is free to roam the apartment so that they become better acquainted with their environment and all their smells. Then we plan to separate them in cat crates facing each other across the room so that they get used to the sight of each other. Then we’ll slowly move the crates progressively closer until they are not as hostile toward one another before we attempt to take them out of the crates for real one on one time.

This is the plan we have. We’ll see how the kitties render it in THE KITTY CHRONICLES.
